Jim Cleamons, Los Angeles Lakers coach, is partnering with the City of Inglewood,
the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, Dada Footwear, the African American Unity Center, the NFL Goals for Life program,
Embrace – Racial Harmony and Equality, Samaritan Innovative Science Foundation, and Samaritan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
to host the first annual Jim Cleamons Books and Basketball Youth Experience. The
camp is a one-week sports and education experience that focuses on academic enrichment in math and science, personal development,
and team building skills. The camp will serve academically underperforming children
ages 8 – 11 and youth ages 12 – 14 and is being conducted in South Los Angeles and North Las Vegas, two historically
underperforming communities. Outside of the celebrities teaching the curriculum,
the camp will feature a number of uniquely effective alternative education curriculums:
The GEMS curriculum is a fun and exciting way to engage students in math
and science. Students in South Los Angeles rank lowest in the state of California
and among the lowest in the US in math and science proficiency. Similarly, students
in North Las Vegas rank last in math and science proficiency in the state of Nevada.
Moreover, local community colleges have adjusted their math and science requirements in response to this poor performance. Consequently, we’re experiencing a "dumbing down of our schools”
The NEFE curriculum teaches the basics of personal finance to young people
while they are developing habits and attitudes about money that will influence them for the rest of their lives. It is based
on the philosophy that learning about money is as important as earning it—and that effective money management results
from a disciplined behavior, which is most easily mastered if learned early in life.
The Samaritan Life Skills Program taught jointly with the NFL Goals for Life
Program emphasizes etiquette, grammar, situation appropriate attire, social formalities, appreciation of diversity, self-confidence,
character-building, anger management, conflict resolution, and general life and social skills necessary to assimilate and
succeed in any society
Embrace is a powerful diversity program designed to promote understanding and respect among all races,
religions and cultures through a unique and engaging training program. Embrace
seeks to help youth value diversity in their personal lives, such that these values become prominent in their community. Collectively, the collaborative partners mentioned above
feel that the trend of accepting poor performance in math and science is detrimental to the development of our communities
and further increases the incidence of adverse public health events that are negatively associated with our communities. Consequently, we are hosting a series of week long events, commencing with the Jim
Cleamons Books and Basketball Youth Sports Experience, to remedy the situation
We are requesting your assistance in ensuring that this monumental inaugural event is extremely successful. We would be honored if you would partner with us in performing this meritorious work. ) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization sponsored by Samaritan Pharmaceuticals (SPHC). SISF has been
building partnerships with others to bring long term solutions to the medical and social issues we are facing in the world
today. The foundation focuses on several areas: (1) Bringing free drugs to all children with HIV and affordable
life saving drugs to underserved individuals and individuals in underdeveloped countries; (2) creating a center of excellence
for orphan drug development; (3) improving quality of life for underserved children and youth through health and education;
and (4) improving the academic proficiency of underperforming children and youth in science and math.
The Samaritan
Innovative Science Foundation wants to make drugs free for the children of the world. SISF, through the success of its sponsor
organization (Samaritan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) envisions the end of the AIDS epidemic in Africa and other resource-scarce
settings (Samaritan Pharmaceuticals’ HIV drug has been proclaimed by industry experts as the “solution we’ve
been waiting for”). This vision can be accomplished through innovative partnerships with a wide range of organizations
such as governments, businesses, NGOs/CBOs, and other donor organizations that are able to work on solutions to this complex
medical and social challenge.
SISF understands
that most novel new drugs are developed by small pharmaceutical companies (like Samaritan) or university scientists and then
licensed to large pharmaceutical companies because the inventor can’t afford to develop and market the discovery (on
average it takes 15 years and $1 billion to take a drug from discovery to approval).
SISF realizes that the high cost of life-saving drugs is largely due
to this licensing process. SISF further understands that the ability to access these medications at manufacturer’s
cost will facilitate their provision to those for whom the drugs are cost-prohibitive. SISF seeks to broker these negotiations
with major pharmaceutical companies and distribute life-saving drugs free to children and at an affordable cost to those in
need.
The foundation is also working to develop an Orphan Drug
Institute. One in every 10 individuals in the USA has received a diagnosis of a rare disease. SISF seeks to finance
drug research for children with these rare diseases. There is not a lot of research on orphan drugs because the diseases
are so rare that there is not a large demand to produce the research and drugs for these diseases. Most of the other pharmaceutical
companies are not interested in the research of these drugs because they offer no financial gain. Dr. Greeson,
Executive Director of SISF and CEO of Samaritan Pharmaceuticals, wants to research these diseases and look for drugs to cure
or assist.
Another focus of the foundation is improving the academic
proficiency of underperforming students in math and science. One initiative SISF is sponsoring is the Samaritan Bio-Bus, a
40-foot custom designed science learning center that will bring biotechnology education to classrooms and communities throughout
Los Angeles and Nevada. Students will have hands on experience with laboratory experiments and professional development
workshops. In addition, teachers will have the opportunity to learn teaching techniques in a biotechnology laboratory.
The program is extremely exciting for kids, who participate in activities such as testing their own DNA and solving CSI-type
mysteries. Nationally, the number of children pursuing careers in the science field is declining sharply. SISF seeks
to expose kids to science, help them excel, and build their interest in the discipline.
The Foundation’s fourth objective is to provide resources through community partnerships to support and enhance
educational programs and opportunities in areas where Samaritan Pharmaceuticals has its strongest business presence. Projects
that promote excellence in science education and teaching are priorities. The programs undertaken as a part of SISF's mission
are research-based and stress a reliance on innovation. The programs are typically proven and highly effective. Moreover,
they can be replicated in the foundations targeted interest areas.
The Jim Cleamons
Books and Basketball Camp serves as an example. It is a collaboration with Jim Cleamons, DADA Footwear, AAUC, Building A Champion,
the City of Inglewood, EMBRACE, MUSICAN, Paradigm Learning Centers, NFL Goals for Life, and Samaritan Pharmaceuticals.
The camp is free and targets instruction in four areas: (1) educational enrichment in science and math; (2) personal development
(life skills, social skills, etiquette, grammar, dress for success, financial prudence, etc.); (3) appreciation of diversity;
and (4) fundamental basketball skills. “Mr. Ken Delpit, Director of Foundation
Sports, has done an incredible job in facilitating an organizing this meritorious event” says George Weaver. SISF was
founded in the belief that to save one life is to save a world entire. SISF seeks to make the difference in one person’s
life. The foundation is an extension of Dr. Greeson’s previous work. She is the founder of Freedom
Walk Transitional Housing, A Place For Us, Domiciliary, and Freedom. She also developed the US Navy’s alcohol prevention
program and the substance abuse component of the national Just Say No program. It is her passion and commitment to helping
others that founded SISF.
Dr. Greeson
believes that if, of the 100 decisions you make each day, ½ are for you and ½ are for others, you will create a pretty good
balance. Making decisions for others brings balance to our lives whether it’s for ourselves or our companies.
Dr. Greeson’s principles are founded in her faith in God and her ability to surround herself with good people. We Need Your Help. The work of SISF will tremendously
impact the world. However, a significant amount more funding and resource contribution is required to facilitate these efforts.
Your support is not only requested but desperately needed. We encourage you to partner with us in accomplishing this tremendous
work.
